As a self-published author, I have done a bit of research to ensure that I am setting myself up for success. If you are a new author, like me and you don’t have tens of thousands of followers or any significant fan base then we have to do a bit more work to make sure we launch our first book properly.
I’m not claiming to be an expert, especially since my first book is pending. I’m taking this opportunity to share what information that I have learned in the event that you are considering the same avenue for your first book.
With technology making huge advances in the last 30 years, many services are automated and many processes are much easier and more efficient. Gone are the days where an author needed to have an agent which acted as the middleman between the author and the publishing company. They are not gone completely, but I can see where the role of an agent will no longer be needed in the foreseeable future.
For me personally, I have decided to use the services offered through KDP, Kindle Direct Publishing. If you already have an Amazon account, great! If you don’t, no worries it’s very easy to set up a new account which you will need should you also choose this route. The great thing about using KDP is that you will have the option to have your book available in an e-book, paperback (which they print on demand/eco-friendly) or an audiobook. What’s great, is that you don’t have to pick one or the other, you can choose to have your book available in all three formats.
What are the perks of each format and why should I consider more than one medium? I’m glad that you asked! An e-book is becoming very popular since the rise of smartphones, tablets and e-reader devices like Kindle, Kobo and Nook. For your customers that love to read, but don’t have the space for their collection, an e-book is a great option. It’s easier to carry one device with a 100 books downloaded than it is to physically carry 100 books. Besides, this format appeals to the bargain shopper. Most e-books are considerably less than a traditional paperback.
A traditional paperback format is also a great choice. Many readers love having a tangible copy in their hands. They love the way the pages feel and how the pages smell as they are flipping through them. As I mentioned earlier, KDP offers print on demand which is alleviates wasting paper and resources. Amazon will not have boxes of your book just sitting in their warehouse collecting dust.
Audiobooks are becoming popular for many reasons. There are many commuters that enjoy listening to an audiobook while they travel to work or for business. If you write children’s books, you will be a hero for many parents during the long car rides. Those with a reading disorder now have a means of enjoying your book or it may encourage them to read along.
There are many other self-publishing companies out there, do your research and choose one that suits your needs, your budget and doesn’t compromise your creative rights as the author.
